ANPR cameras will trace all vehicles violating seat belt rules without exceptions
To modernize and strengthen CCTV surveillance, the Trichy city police have installed high-resolution Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at nine key city entry points and major traffic intersections at a cost of INR 28 lakh. Funded under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, these cameras, equipped with advanced software, will help identify and track criminals while also penalizing traffic violations, including driving without seat belts.

Police officials noted that ANPR cameras are not new to Trichy, as areas such as Srirangam, Thiruvanaikoil, Cantonment, Junction, and Melapudur already have them. Unlike standard CCTV cameras, ANPR cameras can automatically capture registration numbers of vehicles involved in violations. The footage is analyzed using dedicated software to retrieve the vehicle owner's details, including name, address, and contact information. Cases will be lodged based on the recorded evidence.

The system now covers all major entry points, including state and national highways passing through the city. Additional cameras have been installed at nine police checkposts, such as those on Trichy-Chennai NH, Trichy-Madurai NH, Trichy-Thanjavur NH, and Trichy-Dindigul NH. Prominent locations, including the Cauvery Bridge, are also under surveillance.

"The new ANPR cameras offer high accuracy and clarity, making it easier to capture images of vehicles and offenders. Dedicated teams will monitor traffic violations," said Trichy City police commissioner N Kamini. Vehicle owners will be notified of violations and can pay fines online, which range from INR 200 to INR 1,000 per offence.

The ANPR cameras can automatically detect and penalize violations such as helmetless riding, carrying excess passengers, and driving without seat belts. Suggestions to include offences like signal jumping by speeding vehicles, particularly high-end bikes and buses, are being considered.

In addition to traffic enforcement, the cameras can assist in tracking criminals involved in crimes like chain-snatching and vehicle theft, enabling interception at police checkposts. "Sustained maintenance of ANPR cameras is crucial. Their effective use will enhance road safety and aid in crime prevention," said P Aiyarappan, a District Road Safety Council member.
