Maruti brands dominate in December but Tata Punch races away to No 1 in 2024

Jan 05, 2025

While the craze for SUVs continues, Maruti Suzuki’s sedans and hatchbacks are also doing well.

Maruti Suzuki has taken a lion’s share of the top 10 car brands sold in December 2024. Overall industry sales for the year totalled 4.3 million units where the other leading players, besides Maruti, were Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Even while Maruti continued its good showing, the year’s top slot went to Tata Punch which was a huge hit with its growing customer base. Tata Motors sold 2,02,030 units of Punch last year. In the process, it was for the first time that a Maruti brand was toppled in its India journey of four decades which has seen the likes of the 800, Alto and Swift dominate the market.

It will now be interesting to see if Tata Punch will continue to lead Maruti in 2025 unless the latter’s hatchback sales stage a strong comeback. Right now, it looks as if the turnaround is happening which means the stage is set for a stiff tug-of-war between Maruti and Tata Motors.

Whilst on the subject of December 2024 sales, Maruti’s Vitara Brezza emerged the top-selling car with 17,336 units, a 35% increase over December 2023 as per Market reports. In second place was its hatchback, Wagon R, which grew 102% year-on-year to 17,303 uni

Not too far behind was Dzire which accounted for sales of 16,573 units of the Dzire in December 2024, reflecting an 18% year-on-year growth. In the process, the welcome news was that sedans are now slowly gaining lost ground, as has been the case with hatchbacks.

Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga also took over the fourth place, selling 16,056 units in December 2024 while its Eeco van and Fronx were in the ninth and 10th places with sales of 11,678 units and 10,752 units apiece.

As for Tata Motors, its Punch and Nexon took the fifth and sixth place with the former reporting sales of 15,073 units, up 9% y-o-y while Nexon was down 11% to 13,536 units. In the case of Hyundai, Creta sold 12,608 units (up 36%) which put it in seventh place. Mahindra & Mahindra’s Scorpio followed at No 8 with 12,195 units, up 7%.

While the craze for SUVs continues, Maruti Suzuki’s sedans and hatchbacks are also doing well. Across the industry, high discounts and other attractive offers provided by manufacturers helped clear inventory in 2024.
