They will conduct sessions for college students on cutting-edge topics such as fintech, electric vehicles, biotechnology and quantum computing.In the coming years, Non-Resident Tamil (NRT) scholars from around the world, specialising in subjects such as quantum computing, electric vehicles and biotechnology will mentor school and college students online.
The initiative, spearheaded by the commissionerate of rehabilitation and welfare of non-resident Tamils, will be implemented in partnership with the Tamil Nadu skill development corporation, department of school education, directorate of collegiate education and the Nan Mudhalvan scheme.
"This initiative, a brainchild of chief minister M.K. Stalin, will broaden students' understanding of global career opportunities and academic paths, preventing them from falling prey to job scams," said S M Nasar, minister for minorities and NRT welfare.
To support this effort, the department has begun creating a scientific and professional alumni database of Tamil Nadu-origin experts settled abroad. Currently, 150 individuals have registered on the platform. B. Krishna Moorthy, Commissioner of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils, highlighted the role of the Directorate of Collegiate Education in compiling lists of Tamil Nadu alumni.
"Individuals who studied in Tamil Nadu can register on our website. They can choose to mentor students, collaborate with industries and institutions, sponsor Tamil Nadu students to study or intern abroad, or support local colleges," Krishna Moorthy said.
As a first step, experts from countries such as Sweden, Germany and South Korea attended the World Tamil Diaspora Day celebrations at the Chennai Trade Centre on Jan 11-12. They will conduct sessions for college students on cutting-edge topics such as fintech, electric vehicles, biotechnology and quantum computing.
In addition, officials are planning to establish Tamil desks in 10 countries to foster trade, education, and research collaborations with Tamil Nadu. "This initiative will create a robust platform for connecting global expertise with local talent," added an official.
