Tata Motors launched a fleet of electric buses for employee transportation at its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand on December 30, 2024. The company aims to reduce its carbon footprint and move towards its net-zero emissions goal by 2045. These electric buses will be powered by a 16MW solar energy plant, making the entire operation environmentally friendly. The initiative is part of Tata Motors' broader sustainability efforts, which include achieving Zero Waste to Landfill and water-positive certifications at the Pantnagar plant.

Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. The introduction of electric buses for workforce transportation is a significant step towards this goal. The Pantnagar plant has already achieved Zero Waste to Landfill and water-positive certifications. This initiative further strengthens the plant's commitment to sustainability. Over 5,000 employees will benefit from this service, and it is estimated to save approximately 1,100 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Limited

TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Limited (TSCMSL), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, will manage the electric bus fleet. The fleet comprises Tata Ultra 9m electric buses, designed and manufactured in India. These buses are equipped with advanced battery systems and modern features for a comfortable and safe commute. The buses will be charged using electricity generated from a 16MW solar energy plant.

“The introduction of electric buses for workforce commuting marks a significant step forward towards fulfilling Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles’ aspiration of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045. We are committed to making all our manufacturing facilities green by integrating sustainability across their entire value chain – from sourcing to development and engineering to operations. I am delighted to launch this initiative in Pantnagar first as it adds to and acknowledges the successes of the facility’s myriad of sustainability initiatives. This plant is already a certified Zero Waste to Landfill facility and has also received water-positive certification by CII-GBC. The launch of a zero emission, e-fleet service creates another major milestone in the sustainability journey of the plant,” stated Vishal Badshah, Vice President and Head of Operations at Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles.

The Tata Ultra EV 9m electric bus features a full-electric drivetrain, regenerative braking system, and Intelligent Transport Systems. This deployment builds on Tata Motors' existing presence in the electric mass mobility sector. The company has already deployed over 3,100 electric buses across ten Indian cities. These buses have collectively covered over 240 million kilometers, with an uptime exceeding 95%. This track record demonstrates the reliability and efficiency of Tata Motors’ electric mobility solutions.
