These haptic buttons provide feedback, illuminate based on available functions, and have a textured surface for tactile identification.BMW revealed its next-generation iDrive system, called Panoramic iDrive, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025. This new system, powered by BMW's Operating System X, will be integrated into all new-generation BMW vehicles starting later this year, replacing many physical controls with haptic buttons and touchscreen operations.
The Panoramic iDrive system centers around four key elements: a Panoramic display at the windshield base, a 3D head-up display, a central touchscreen, and a new multifunction steering wheel. The system debuts in BMW’s Neue Klasse models, beginning with a new SUV in 2025 and followed by the 3 Series replacement in 2026.
What does it all include?
The Panoramic Vision display projects information onto a black printed surface at the base of the windshield, spanning the dashboard's width and providing driver information at eye level. This display is customisable via the central touchscreen.
The optional 3D head-up display projects information onto the windshield above the Panoramic Vision display, supplementing the displayed content with navigation and automated driving system information.
The newly designed touchscreen features an angular shape and utilises matrix backlight technology. BMW states that the new OS simplifies usage, allowing users to transfer information to the Panoramic Vision display with swipe gestures. The two-spoke steering wheel has vertical spokes and incorporates controls for ADAS functions and in-car controls on wing-like extensions flanking the horn. These haptic buttons provide feedback, illuminate based on available functions, and have a textured surface for tactile identification.
Other features
BMW has transitioned from physical controls to haptic buttons for functions like windscreen wipers, turn signals, exterior mirrors, volume control, gear selectors, and window de-icers. The new OS X provides greater customisation than previous BMW operating systems and expands the language capabilities of the intelligent virtual assistant.
The Panoramic Vision display acts as a pseudo-heads-up display. It projects key driving information across the width of the dashboard at eye level, offering customisation options through the central touchscreen.
The 3D head-up display is an optional addition that projects information onto the windshield, complementing the Panoramic Vision display by integrating navigation and automated driving system details. This layered display setup ensures drivers have all necessary information readily available.
The redesigned two-spoke steering wheel features vertical spokes and integrates controls for various functions, including ADAS and in-car settings. These haptic buttons provide tactile feedback and illuminate to indicate their current functionality.
