Soon after launching a two-wheeler running on compressed natural gas (CNG), Bajaj Auto will look into two-wheelers fuelled by compressed biogas (CBG), Rajiv Bajaj, CEO of the auto major, said on Friday. The company is already exploring hydrogen-fuelled two-wheelers.
“The CNG motorcycle is suitable for CBG too, and the kind of work that Amul is doing for the generation of CBG is wonderful for sustainability. If it is converted on a larger scale, which I am sure will happen in the coming years, then vehicles will also run on CBG,” he said on the sidelines of the Amul Clean Fuel BioCNG Car Rally that started from Pune on Nov 15 and Jammu and Kashmir on Nov 19. The rallies will be completed in New Delhi on Nov 26, on National Milk Day.
The company’s electric and CNG products across two-wheelers and three-wheelers account for 44% of domestic revenue. As per the Vahan database, the company sold 26,784 units of CNG two-wheelers so far since it was launched in July.

Amul MD Jayesh Mehta said that the Gujarat-based milk cooperative is actively working on developing biogas for commercial purposes and has also collaborated with Maruti Suzuki India for setting up CBG plants to reduce the dependence on CNG. The solution is mutually beneficial for farmers as they can get additional income, and for the transportation sector as it will reduce the cost of fuel, he said while speaking at the conference.
