This expansion makes UltraTech the first cement company in India to utilise electric trucks on such a large scale and for such a long distance. UltraTech Cement Limited, India's largest cement producer, is expanding its use of electric vehicles for transportation. This move aims to reduce the company's carbon footprint and support its sustainability goals. UltraTech plans to deploy 100 electric trucks to move clinker between its manufacturing units in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. This initiative is projected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by 17,000 metric tons annually.
The decision to scale up follows a successful pilot program initiated in January 2024. UltraTech initially deployed five electric trucks for the same route. The pilot also focused on developing charging infrastructure and training drivers to operate the electric trucks.
What does it indicate?
This expansion makes UltraTech the first cement company in India to utilise electric trucks on such a large scale and for such a long distance. The company is also exploring additional routes for incorporating more electric trucks into its logistics operations and plans to conduct another pilot program for clinker transportation between two different manufacturing units.
“UltraTech is fully committed to realising its Net Zero goal by 2050. We have taken a holistic approach to integrating sustainability in our business conduct. The scale up of EV trucks in our logistics operations underscores our commitment to drive the implementation of sustainable practices in the industry,” stated K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Limited. He further emphasised the company's commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. He highlighted their comprehensive approach to integrating sustainability into business practices and stated that the expanded use of electric trucks reinforces their dedication to implementing sustainable practices within the industry.
UltraTech aims to deploy 500 electric trucks by June 2025, aligning with the Indian government's eFAST initiative. The company has been at the forefront of adopting green logistics solutions. In 2021, it introduced CNG vehicles, followed by LNG vehicles in 2022, and electric trucks in 2024. Currently, UltraTech, in collaboration with logistics partners, has over 468 CNG trucks and 67 LNG trucks transporting products and materials across its various manufacturing facilities.
