Cummins has already included India in its global 'multifuel' platform solution HELM. Global powertrain manufacturer Cummins has the 'intent' to manufacture battery packs in India as part of its JV with the Tata group. Speaking to TOI, Nitin Jirafe, MD, Tata Cummins said, "It's part of the strategy - the joint venture with Tata group includes the manufacture of battery packs but right now it is a work in progress with our customers. Definitely the intent is there to make battery packs in India."
Already top commercial vehicle players are electrifying their light and small commercial vehicles and looking at CNG, LNG and other options for the medium and heavy duty trucks.
Cummins has already included India in its global 'multifuel' platform solution HELM. "This is a high efficiency, low emissions multi fuel platform and Cummins has invested around $1.4 billion in engineering and a similar amount in manufacturing this globally," he added. Currently there are a handful of locations around the world where products based on the platform are being made. These include plants in the US, UK, China, Brazil and India. "Currently our Jamshedpur plant makes the 6.7 litre hydrogen engine," he said.
The company's Phaltan plant in Maharashtra makes LNG engines. "We are not looking at entering the small commercial vehicle or light commercial vehicle segment with our multi fuel engines - our focus is on medium and heavy duty vehicles only," he added.
